APA example paper

hi class this is a quick run-through of what an APA paper should look like at the beginning this is your title page one you should have headers so the very first page should say running head semicolon notices capitalized small caps and in here this is all caps this is actually the title of your paper and if the title would be longer than what would fit here then you will need to abbreviate the title so you can shortened version of the title you should have page numbers here on the right of you header so then but the middle of the page you should have your title you should have your author or authors just your names and then the university or yeah educational institution that you’re affiliated with okay if you want to put any kind of author notes you can put it right there too below the low end of the title page so this it’s can be put there so any kind of additional information you want included on your title page should be put right here as an author note and so as you notice again the header here changes to simply having the title again all caps and then the page number continues now an APA paper should have an abstract and you put abstract there’s no indentation and and this is basically a quick summaries with what the papers about so that if somebody was to pick up your paper and read the abstract they would know the gist of your paper you can list key words there it should be no longer than 250 words so this is not meant to be very long to be a paragraph or so then your paper starts somewhere on the third page we have again the title is right here and then there’s an indentation and the first paragraph starts now I do want you to note that you’re supposed to have citations whether where the information comes from so here’s one of them to authors and year and he talks about you know different things here and and here’s another one and here’s if if you prefer some paraphrased it or quoted it you can also put it in parenthesis so here’s your authors and date so continue on pages and pages so note that’s done the head are still there again all the paragraphs are indented everything’s double spaced it is in Times New Roman 12 points and some continues continues you can do some headings here they have two this is level one and then this is level two so basically heading in some heading if you will if you need to do those and go on to the rest of the paper okay then here’s your reference page so again head are still there with the page numbers you should tell it references and then you should have authors date and then usually is the title of the article and ended journal and volumes and pages now if you’re using electronic sources and websites and stuff like that then this should be so it should be your author or corporate author should be the date and if you don’t have a date you should use that your access date and then you would have here instead of the title of the article it would be the title of the web page and then this is the top would be instead of the journal and be the title of the website and so the website would be for example like the CDC is a website but the CDC’s got thousands of pages the web page may be for example information on the flu and so your your title of your webpage could be influenza but the title of the website would be the Center for Disease Control so that’s your references again note that’s there’s the it’s de’lon here is flush but this is indented and it is all double-spaced still still in the same font as the rest of the paper so also it is alphabetical by order of a order author alphabetically it’s important to has to be put in revised formats

APA Annotated Bibliography

hello my name is Catherine yes and I’m the AGS tutor at Wisconsin Lutheran College today we will be talking about annotated bibliographies some of your courses that Wisconsin Lutheran College will require you to write an annotated bibliography an annotated bibliography is a working list of references such as books journal articles online documents and websites that you will use for an athelete research paper or project each reference citation is followed by a short summative and evaluative paragraph which is called an annotation thus the entity a bibliography has two parts the citation and the annotation first things first you must collect sources a great place to start is the WOC library webpage you can search on top cap for books or even choose for many different databases like Excel host ProQuest and JSTOR to find scholarly articles if you have any issues finding an article be sure to ask librarian for assistance there’s no limit to how many sources convenient a to bibliography be sure to find the required number of sources your professor asks for a bibliography pretty much means references the first part of your annotated bibliography is to have citations for books journal articles websites and others resources quick citation review the APA citation begins with the author’s last name followed by the first time your initials afterwards comes the publishing in parentheses this part is always consistent what follows depends on the type of stores here we have a citation or a journal article to know what always refer to the APA manual or the Purdue owl a page citation machines can be helpful to create citations but what comes out is not always accurate it is actually much easier and faster to learn the citation rules and apply them for yourself another way to easily get citations for your journal articles is through the database many many patients will cite the sources for you simply click on cite the citation for AP department will then be made available simply copy you paste the citation into your document generally the database with citation is always accurate as with reference the citation in your annotated bibliography should be listed in alphabetical order so what you reference in your paper is easy to find also like after the first should have a hanging indent within the annotations there should be a summary of the source this should be a brief summary paraphrase as much as possible but it is also kiya cool when necessary then the source should be assessed how does it compare to other sources in your annotated bibliographies is the information reliable is the source bias their objective what is the main message the source is trying to get across there should also be a reflection where the source is considered in relation to your research how does this source still in the larger paper how will this source be used does it bring new light to the topic these questions should all be considered in creating your annotations the size of your annotation maybe are you follow your instructors guidelines in most cases the annotation will be no more than three paragraphs many professors actually only asked for one paragraph either way try to make sure all three points are addressed sunrise is best for flowers in this example we see all three the first two sentences are summary of the text the next to assess what the author was trying to say as well as the intended audience and the final reflects on how the source is helpful observe all citations and annotations should be on the same page one after the next you do not need page breaks between citations please keep in mind that all your text including the right of beneath the citation must be indented so that the author’s last name is the only text that is completely flushed flat this keeps your citations organized and easy to find again notice the two parts of the annotated bibliography you have a citation then the annotation which summarizes assesses and reflects on the source I hope this video was helpful to you have a lovely day and as please remember to cite your sources

APA Format for a Website Reference

this is Colin Eason with Pima Medical Institute and today we’re going to take a look at how to create an APA reference for a website on screen we have some basic information about the website we need to create a reference form and as often is the case with websites we don’t have the name of an author and in fact we don’t even have a publication date but we do have a copyright date we have the name of the section of the website that we were looking at we have the name of the website itself or the name of the organization’s website and we also have the full web address or URL so let’s put all that together in APA reference format it’s pretty straightforward because we don’t have an author we can’t start the reference with an author’s name right so in this case we start the reference with the section title that we were looking at so in this example it’s how to create an APA paper the easy way please note that we use sentence case in other words we only capitalize words that are proper nouns we do not capitalize the first letter of every single word in that title next in parentheses as with all other APA references we put the publication date or in this case we put the copyright date if we had a full publication date of year month and day we could certainly include that but in this case we’re just going to put the copyright date next in italics this is very important here in italics we put the name of the website that we’re referencing so in this case it’s Pima Medical Institute as with journal and magazine titles we use title case that means that we use a capital letter for the beginning of every significant word of four letters or more so Pima Medical Institute it’s also proper now so therefore we include capital letters whenever referencing web addresses we also have to put retrieved from followed by the web address itself now if that web address runs on to multiple lines three four five lines sometimes we need to include the full thing please do not truncate or cut it short in any way shape or form you do need to include the full web address sometimes your wood processor will automatically change the color of that text into blue and will underline it that’s absolutely fine you can leave it like that or if that bothers you you could highlight the text change the color back to black and remove the underlining if necessary that’s how to create the reference but what about those parentheses all citations that go in the middle of your research paper in the text in this case since there’s no author we can’t put an author and the publication year so we have to put the title of the article please note that we actually put that within quote marks those double quotes and then we put the year of publication after that you cannot provide a page number for a web resource since there are no published page numbers you should never ever include a page number of anything that you’re referencing from a website last but not least occasionally there is no date visible on a website in that case APA has a solution for us wherever there is no date we are allowed to put an D in lower case lower case n period D period literally stands for no date we put that into the reference and as far as the parenthetical citation same thing the title of the website goes into quotes and we put nd at the end for no date as with other APA references if the website section that we’re looking at actually has an author we would of course begin the reference with the author’s name and this section right here the section title would move to here just like with the journal reference it would go right in front of the name of the website itself don’t worry that little bit complicated watch the screencast again look at the magic formula on screen and hopefully that will all make sense for you you

How the Russos Made Captain America Great Again | Video Essay

cap sa cap sa cap sa cap sa kappa say cap sa kappa say kappa c kappa say kappa say kappa c kappa c kappa say Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich alright nerds buckle up because you’re not gonna just get one Captain America essay oh no you’re gonna get two of them uh knockers and I haven’t even had my morning cup of tea yet it’s gonna go off do you hear me do you hear me can you dig it no I’m just kidding the truth is I’ve of course wanted to do this for a while but I want to get it right or at least I hope I have and that’s because Steve Rogers aka Captain America means a lot to me he’s up there if not in the very top spot for being my favorite superhero and more so than that he would be anywhere near there if it wasn’t for Chris Evans and the Russo brothers after some stumbling blocks during his formative years in the MCU the Russo’s came on board just knock out of the park with Captain America the Winter Soldier in 2014 from there the Russos just kept on going from strength to strength taking on even more characters in scale you’re always keeping a keen eye on the First Avenger himself even when it seems like he was neglected he actually wasn’t I see the same criticisms of the character coming up time and time again he’s not powerful enough he’s boring he’s too much of a Boy Scout he’s jingoistic well of course this essay I’m going to explain why all of that is in my humble opinion completely incorrect he’s or inspiring exciting interesting and has some of the most interesting powers any superhero has ever been given before I got into Captain America I thought he only really worked in World War two and that was an inherent problem of his character after years of watching reading and loving Captain America I can safely say I was wrong Captain America only works in World War two and that is exactly why he’s the most interesting character in the entire MCU across this video in its subsequent concluding part I want to talk about why exactly that is and what it means for the end of Steve Rogers story so strap in because we’re going to be going through every star-spangled MCU appearance in incredibly descriptive detail cap has the best films the best supporting characters the best villains the best action sequences and despite being a still point he will have the best arc — by the end of endgame this is how the Russos made Captain America great again yes so as ever I want to point out the contributions of the writing duo Christopher Markus Stephen McFeely and since you will be looking at one of the movies that they worked on without the help of the Russos albeit I’ll be criticizing some aspects I feel that they will be more directly focused on than in my previous efforts the same goes for writer and director Joss Whedon on the Avengers films in fact you know what’s for at it I would like to point out the contributions of everyone in the credits of every MCU movie I’m discussing here or have discussed previously also the people that worked on the film who might have been credited because what happens to basically it takes a lot of people to make a movie work and I couldn’t possibly point out all of them as down target but you get my point thank you filmmakers you’re killing it sometimes during these videos we get comments accusing me of never having picked up a comic book so I’m just going saying now no I’ve never read a comic book I mean yes yes I have read comic books now stop whining you bunch of nerds I often don’t refer to the comic book characters in these videos because I don’t want to get bogged down in talking about adaptation and I’m focusing on the MCU the key letter in the acronym being the C which of course stands for curse cinematic that’s right in 2009 Chris Evans was cast as Captain America and my reaction was what Johnny Storm is playing who now I don’t think I was alone in my trepidation those movies weren’t particularly good and Evans is fine in them but I love his Johnny Storm it was always veering on the wrong side of cocky with someone like down your Hemsworth we had no idea how they were going to be a superheroes before going in but Evans had already shown off what he could do plus it seemed like a strange choice the guy who’s known for hamming it up in Scott Pilgrim and having a banana assassin Not Another Teen Movie taking on a character who is known to be stoic to the point and militaristic hmm he didn’t seem like a match made in heaven but like the Joker’s and Jackman’s of the world Chris Evans proved he had this whole acting rigmarole down pat from the very first scene Captain America the First Avenger simply would not work without Chris Evans performance my biggest problem with cap in the comics is an outsider to a lot of his stories at the time was he looked and felt really dull really square Georges stereotypical gung-ho superhero he had the chin of a more tongue-in-cheek character like the tick or mr. incredible he everyone seemed to take him super seriously and it just put me off completely at first well Chris Evans performance swayed me on was the vulnerability brought to the character the key thing about this performance is that I believe there’s a tiny little 90 pound nerd on screen even when he’s amped up and full of Super Soldier Serum his temperament his somewhat timid nature it all feeds in he’s not charming in the same way that Tony and Thora charming he’s a bit more like a puppy dog with a heart of gold he captures the steely optimism and determination of Steve Rogers from the first few scenes set on doing whatever it takes to serve as a soldier on the frontlines of World War two on the surface it might seem like something a modern audience can’t relate to but the movie does a great job of establishing the climate of World War Two and the pressure to do your parts are you Bucky Bucky come on there are men laying down their lives I got no right to do any less than them that’s what you don’t understand yes wild on left right and center but he sticks to his principles and we see that from his very first steps into the MCU could you imagine being this bully guy by the way seeing Captain America on the news years later and finding out all the things he did for everyone including him and it feels like a massive dick for being him up do you want to kill Nazis is this a test yes the movie only gets a few scenes with dr. earth sky and the mental figure to Steve who created the serum but it does plenty with it I don’t want to kill anyone I don’t like bullies I don’t care where they’re from this line perfectly shows us white actor like cap can be so principled but still kill Batman doesn’t kill but he’s birthed into a scenario where he has the luxury to choose not to he’s fighting street crime Captain America is a character born out of war so of course he would have to rationalize it differently I think this moment really digs into the whole war brings and it further helps the audience to place themselves into Steve’s shoes and understand the context of the war that’s raging on around him Steve Rogers doesn’t want to kill anyone but as a great man once said sometimes the only choices you have a bad ones but you still have to choose this is why you were chosen because the strongmen who has known power all his life they lose respect for that power but a weak men loss of value lost ranks this is a relationship every bit as nuanced as ginseng and Tony in iron man and his death like Vincennes is the catalyst for Steve to put his heart to good use and become something more in most superior movies once the hero has their power we get a smattering of fun scenes where they get to grips with a newfound status quo they test the limits of what they can do and they waste no time taking a bite out of crime the First Avenger on the other hand keep Steve Rogers a loser and it’s probably one of the best things about the entire movie nice boots Tinkerbell I think the only know the one song but let me I’ll see what I can do [Music] despite proving himself by stopping agent Thoren the army still aren’t convinced they wanted an army not a do-gooder with little choice Steve starts performing at USO shows knocking out Hitler and selling out to the max the movie takes the classic cap uniform from the comics and uses it to make Steve appear on dignified this isn’t an insult to the source material who actually go outside you prefer yellow spandex to the contrary this is an ingenious way of repurposing something that wouldn’t work for the screen and making it essential to Steve’s story in a fresh way and we really feel for him we know how desperate he was to serve his country and do what he felt was right but instead he’s forced to be another cog in the machine you want to talk about superior deconstruction this is the movie that did it right when he discovers that Bucky and a whole battalion of soldiers are imprisoned behind enemy lines Steve decides to ignore doing what he’s told and trusts his guts it’s a great sequence we’re supposed to be Captain America we’re over an hour into the movie and only now has Steve truly become the captain the confidence the First Avenger has its first half to hold off and build towards this is fantastic it’s also the key to understanding when the movie falls flat Burt we’ll get to that the USO show sequence and the breakout sequence both plant the seeds of Steve’s relationship with the authority early in his run we see that as perhaps expected Steve Rogers is willing to trust the man and do what he’s told he trusts the army to do the best thing and believes in the cause you want to serve your country and the most important battlefield of the war sir it’s all I want so he’s happy to take the hits and do these USO shows even if he doesn’t want to but the movie also establishes that you had a line we lose more men and we’d say but I don’t expect you to understand that because you’re a forest girl I think I understand just fine your friend is most likely dead even so he’s devising a strategy to take by the time he’s done that it could be too late he’s willing to break the rules if he feels it’s what needs to be done and if breaking the rules involves saving Bucky well it seems he’s always been keen on doing whatever it takes for his best friend there’s one aspect of this movie that stood the test of time the best and informed all of caps appearances ever since Steve’s relationship to Peggy Carter I said previously that Gamora and Pizza have the best relationship in the series in my last MCU video and that is true Tony and pepper a close second what’s special about Stephen Peggy is that they never get to have any proper relationship but we spend the entire movie wishing that they could Peggy Carter exhausted by the gung-ho hyper masculinity she puts up with on a daily basis encounters a breath of fresh air in the ever optimistic kind-hearted Steve Rogers she’s never met anyone quite like him and that’s before the serum the way she touches his pet in this bit is hilarious and similarly Steve’s never met anyone quite like her she might admire his optimism but she also tests his naivety and forces him to see that the world isn’t always as black and white as he might think bullies come in all shapes and sizes they could and should see where the connection might go but there’s a war to win so that’s why it doesn’t happen in fact Peter quill already summed up why this relationship worked so well guy in a girl dig each other never say because if they do the ratings would go down sort of thing that also explains why NAT and banner working the Avengers but not at all in Avengers age of Ultron I don’t know if this qualifies as a hot take or not I’ll let you be the judge but I really bought the connection between NAT and banner in the first movie then being in a relationship by the start the second was too much of a jump too quickly they should have been like Peter and Gamora they should have made us want them to get together by virtue of keeping them apart anyway the first half of the movie from scarcity Rogers all the way through to his triumphant rescue of Bucky and the Howling Commandos is just the delight but unfortunately that’s where the delight kind of ends the biggest problem of this movie after a strong first half it turns into a biopic well it turns into all the things that would make a bad biopic we don’t see caps adventures in World War 2 this skips over we see all the bare essential glimpses to let us know what happened for Encyclopedia Creason ‘he’s robbing them of as much impact we don’t feel the wins against hydra because they passed us by in 30 seconds we get the impression cap and Peggy’s fondness is growing but is largely left untouched even when we do get to see something important for a whole scene how generous of them we now have a reason to care because Steve hasn’t seemed to Bucky’s death should be the most upsetting demise next to Steve itself but it’s barely as a motive as Doctor Erskine’s it should feel like this this is supposed to be Steve’s best and only friend but it falls flat the same can be said of Red Skull was planned he frequently scoffs at Hitler and his Nazi counterparts efforts and schemes spill their blood across every field in Europe but still he is no closer to achieving his goals and his expertise seem broad and highly useful through magic science but what does this big brain think up blowing up the Allies I guess that’s probably about as good as what Hitler was going to can’t we’ve to fight the Allies so why was he so desperate to break away from the Nazi regime did he really need the tesseracts to drop a few more bombs this isn’t me plot hole bashing it all makes sense it’s just a bit uninspired like is this really the most interesting thing you could do with the tesseract as a plot device of course cap defeats the Red Skull who see we need to seem too great did he teleport to an unknown part of space what he’s up to I guess one I’ll find out and finally we hurtle towards what the movie feels like it’s been itching to get to the hole two hours without really earning it Steve Rogers has to die to stop the bombs and crash the plane and as a scene it is really well done I like that they treat it as a real death it helps to give the necessary weight so that we actually empathize with Peggy in contrast that Bucky death from earlier where you can almost feel that Steve has read two movies ahead and knows that he’s going to come back mullet and all I probably sound really harsh on this movie but let me assure you I’ve been a First Avenger apologist since 2011 I think if anything because I’m keen on it I perhaps feel like a Chabot more openly about what I perceive to be its flaws because make no mistake the First Avenger made me love the character it made me believe Chris Evans was the perfect choice for the role and it signaled the third point in a Trinity of MCU heroes that were going to anchor the entire saga in the lead-up to its cosmic crescendo on that note how did they meet [Music] the Avengers in the Winter Soldier work in tandem to paint a picture of the modern time Steve lives in what he thinks in the world around him and waiting makes him feel inside there’s some great deleted scenes showing how isolated Steve is in modern NYC but joss whedon was right when he decided that all we really need to see to capture how Steve is feeling is this what do I love about Joss Whedon’s Captain America the kam penis son just don’t for the first Avengers movie introducing us to alien invasions Norse gods running around with ancient super weapons and the world’s first superhero team-up caps optimistic and old-fashioned out of touch ways a heartwarming and Root the audience in amongst all the crazy stay with that stick is it may be magical but it looks an awful lot like a Hydra love I also loved that you can get the best out of everyone he makes Banner feel at ease and respected as a person and a scientist of value within seconds of meeting him word is you can find the cube only word I care about that’s probably the first time Banner has met someone who wasn’t we’re interested in the Hulk in years he shows courage against a god who ends up respecting him as a fellow warrior his army background wins over the shield agents on the team and when all is said and done even Tony Stark knows deep down that he respects him a super soldier living legend who kind of lives up to the legend it’s great that despite all the ego tripping throughout the entire movie when a plan needs to be hatched Tony Stark doesn’t even hesitate to hand over the reins to Captain America Parker alright listen up they don’t call in the Star Spangled ma’am the plan for nothing you know it’s because of the stars and the Spangled other people in this room which one is it a wearing a spangly outfit and be not abuse Steve this bit always makes me laugh because it sounds like banner is actually answering Tony’s jab but the people in this room which one is a wearing a spangly outfit and be not abuse intern copies the ones give Tony the impetus for his sacrifice play from earlier on in the movie well I like about their relationship is that it’s never really been easy they respect each other they need each other and sometimes they even like each other there’s always that air of tension in the room you know you may not be a threat but you better stop pretending to be a hero you’re a laboratory experiment Rogers everything special about you my love bottle they have very different ways of looking at the world and often there’s no getting around that their greatest strengths are their principles but the MCU always shines just enough of a light on the idea but it might ruin them too but of course more on that later we didn’t cap shines when he’s leading the other Avengers the same way directs them all to their stations for the Chitauri battle ahead of course being the apex of that and Hulk smash and that’s all great where I don’t think we didn’t get SCAP right he has no idea how to make him exciting I think Steve’s usage in both this movie and age of Ultron really emphasizes Whedon’s inability to juggle this particular team strengths give him a bunch of average smugglers or a selection of heroes who are all super powered and Whedon does just fine but he’s always struggled with the Avengers I touched on this a little bit in my Iron Man essay he boosts Tony to the point where it feels like the rest of the team are coasting off his efforts cap is thrown around like a rag doll in pretty much every battle we see Thor fight the Hulk crossed cap fights a switch Hawkeye is taken out 2/3 of the movie we didn’t rioting Thor scenes with Loki fantastic Whedon writing Thor with any other character NYU phone calls at war not so fantastic it’s not hard to see why audiences joked that he was no one’s favorite Avenger when you put him alongside all his teammates and he doesn’t feel unique or exceptional now the biggest thing people like to complain about with capping the Avengers is the costume and I get it but I also kind of love this outfit it’s this poster kite with Captain America I think you’re ever going to get plus it makes a whole lot of sense for story reasons Coulson is a Captain America fanboy so of course he’d go big and bright and colorful and optimistic especially when he says that those aspects are what they’re directly trying to play up Stars and Stripes a little old-fashioned everything that’s happening the things that are about to come to light people might just need a little old-fashioned I also like the implication that Steve thought he wouldn’t be Captain America ever again but as soon as he realizes that no this is exactly what the world needs right now he just wants to help he’s all in of course he’s going to wear the types again for them Plus seriously as soon as the helmet comes off it doesn’t look bad at all that the helmet is the thing that is dragging the whole look down and with that here’s my ranking of all of his outfits at number eight we have the USO showman outfit it’s an excellent suit for story reasons and it fits the tone of the scene it’s used in beautifully but for obvious reasons it’s my least favorite at number seven we have the world war two outfit from the First Avenger yeah I know this one is popular but I’ve just never really dug it it’s super clunky I know that’s the point it’s a period suit that I just I still don’t dig it I’m sorry at number 6 we have the World War Two outfit from the Winter Soldier this one edges out the other one slightly it’s got the third stripe down the middle and it’s a bit more streamlined but I like the idea that it’s a recreation of his suit and it’s never actually been worn before he uses it in Winter Soldier and number five we have the Avengers outfit from Civil War I like this outfit a great deal it’s combines the best parts of all of his looks but I don’t rate it quite as much as the Ultron variant there’s just not enough light going on in this one and number four we have the Avengers spandex from the Avengers don’t act so surprised okay you know deep down this costume is dope as soon as he takes that ghastly helmet off and number three we have Nomad from infinity war I know this is technically the Civil War outfit after skipping the dry cleaners but he’s got a radically different look what would that sweet sweet hair and beard combo so that’s got to count and number two we have the stealth suit from Winter Soldier this was the perfect outfit to signal the tonal shifts from the earlier movies to Winter Soldier and the lack of red and white is really refreshing plus it has that dope star in the middle at number one we have the Avengers outfit from age of Ultron this is the quintessential cap uniform for me it’s functional the helmet is perfect but it’s also got colors it’s got the white on the arms which is sorely lacking in later iterations of the outfit and hey I know it’s a slight change but it edges it out compared to them also note the newest endgame outfit with the scales looks dope and it will most likely take the top spot on this list come April 26 but since I haven’t seen enough of it in action yet I’m not going to count it here just yet also I read it those white suits but since they’re a team outfits I’m not going to count it either be sure to tell me what your costume rankings would be in the comments especially if you like the Avengers outfit when talking about what the Russos did to elevate him it’s not me saying that what came before was necessarily bad or needed to be fixed nor are they some infallible messiahs of cinema that can do no wrong it’s more that Steve’s first and second outing did enough to make me love the character but still had room to improve in certain areas there was always a whiff of unfulfilled potential it was time to switch things up enter 2014’s Captain America the Winter Soldier and here we finally enter the Russo era you might assume that Captain America was a favorite of these self-confessed type book fans but Joe and Anthony Russo felt quite the opposite HAP was not a favorite character of mine growing up the issue I had with cap as a character was I found him very square so our whole approach with the movie was how can we make cab interesting to a comic book fans such as myself who didn’t like the character in much the same way JJ Abrams not being a fan of Star Trek helped him keep a level head when making the 2009 reboot while how much Smith went into the role of the eleventh Doctor with the blank slates it can be a very good thing for the people behind these movies to have an unfamiliarity with the material before diving in the Russos took a good look at cap what worked from the previous movies and what didn’t and made decisions based on what they would like to see not from a good cap story but just a good story we thought okay now that he’s gone away for 70 years and he’s coming back to the modern world here’s an opportunity for the guy he can be somebody different when cap came out of the ice and the Avengers he was thrown headfirst into a battle for the planet mace an entire team of incredible individuals and barely had time to pause for breath in the Winter Soldier he’s had time it’s been two years since the events of that movie he’s taken up a permanent position as a member of shield his job description is unclear maybe it’s heads ass kicker or something probably freelance specially in the world for a kid his age and all right this is a very different caps what we’re used to he’s tougher and more dangerous than ever the opening set piece on the Lemurian star is the Russos making a statement signaling to the audience that you were wrong to count cap out as a force to be reckoned with this is probably the point at which I’d really like to examine the action in the cap movies as a whole because the Winter Soldier easily represents the seismic shift between this to this they really amp up Steve Rogers in this one from a story standpoint he’s been learning more modern fighting techniques in the two years since he was defrosted but it’s pretty much a complete retcon of his abilities if we’re really being honest he’s stronger he takes way more of a beating he can jump from huge Heights without a parachute this time he wearing a parachute No no he was [Music] this iteration of CAP took what worked about the character so far established the emotional vulnerability the hearts and molded it with the hard edge action from movies like the raid cabbie is one of the heroes in the MCU that the Russos can handle the best on an action level because he has a perfect power level for their sensibilities they set pieces are bold to the action frenetic and there’s always always a clear overbearing threat to overcome he’s powerful enough to give you proper superhero action he’s also human enough that he can get shot he can get blown up he can just get straight-up pummeled all the same rules of classic actions still apply she’s got a bit of an extra kick to it the best way to show just how much the Russos revamped cap as an action hero is to compare two similar scenes in the first avenger in the Winter Soldier in both movies Captain Rogers is speeding across the screen on a motorbike directly ahead and facing down for a game of chicken is a mini-boss if you will for the former and armored tank and for the latter and armored Jets both formidable armed to the teeth and ready to blow him away in the First Avenger caps speeds towards the tank dodging cannon fire and then he pushes a button on his motorbike which happens to be a super duper gadget motorbike and he blows up the tank instantly in the Winter Soldier all he has are his wits and his trusty shield he dodges fire hits the brakes and sends himself hurling through the air on top of the Jets he froze his shield full pelt at the engines and zips left right and center as it crashes to the ground he combines his agility his strength and his tactical mastery to beat it but to mention finishing with a nice little superior landing this is the perfect display of caps power underestimated is just a man of Frisbee seconds later you’re eating his dust this scene exemplifies the aspects of caps powers that make him exciting to watch whereas the first Avengers scene sees him relying on gadgets to beat his foes he doesn’t out think them he just brings better equipment that’s right even mentioning how both of these things starts the first avenger sees cap coming up with an idea and then we cut to it the Winter Soldier sees cap on edge where of the people around him tension is already in the air and then he gets into an elevator so does everyone else more and more in fact at each passing floor until well you know the line before we get started does anyone want to get out the way both movies build up to an exciting action set piece on night and day difference cap might be a square but it’s his relationships with the people around him from the goofballs to the silent killers that are what make his ideals and his way of thinking so engrossing in the Winter Soldier there’s three key relationships that drive the entire movie Steve’s relationship to Sam Wilson aka the Falcon his relationship to Natasha Romanov aka Black Widow and his relationships the Winter Soldier aka his best friend from 70 years ago lucky who the hell’s Bucky I touched on this a little bit previously in my Iron Man se but since we’re focusing on the big man himself this time let’s actually really look at these relationships I don’t know how Anthony Mackie does it but somehow he’s made one the lamest characters on paper a total blast the Falcon is an entertaining addition to the film and provides it with some real levity I mean breakfast you guys eat that sort of thing but there’s also a deeper emotional cortes interactions with cap Steve Rogers might be a man out of time but both of them are struggling to adjust to the world after fighting I’m home lying in my bed and it’s like lying on a marshmallow I feel like I’m gonna sink right to the floor Sam gives Steve a friendship he’s not had since the 1940s and Steve gives Sam a renewed sense of purpose Steve sees the good in Sam Wilson and when he’s on the run it makes perfect sense did he turn up on his doorstep even though they’ve only just met he works his caps best friend and sidekick for all the reasons the war machine doesn’t I’m sorry to anyone the life’s war machine but I sucks even the people his own universe think that I’m like boom you looking for this boom you looking for this boom you looking for this boom are you looking why do I even talk to you guys everywhere else that story kills that’s the whole story yes war machine story oh this is very good then I’m like rody he was just a palette swap clone of Iron Man no having slightly bigger guns doesn’t equate so much the Falcon skill set is completely different two caps and they complement each other perfectly the on-screen bands was just a lot of fun to watch and their personalities have a much clearer contrast like we know is one of many characters who got Roux sowed for the first time in the MCU Natasha Romanov feels like a genuine threat and we also see her finally really in trouble — lost it was nice to see a little bit of her friendship with Clint in the last movie there just wasn’t enough of it Jews the fact that he spent almost the entire time under Loki’s spell she’s not swooning over Bruce Banner and worrying about the implications of supposedly being a monster because she can’t have children in the Winter Soldier she’s faced with the realization that her job means she will forever straddle the line between right and wrong even if she doesn’t realize it I first joined shell death and I was going straight I guess I just traded in the KGB for Hydra this moral conundrum helps to remind us that she’s a spy first superhero second or at least she is at this point in the franchise just like with Sam Wilson that skill set really contributes to the adventure and their contrasting styles make some neat moments the scene in the shopping mall is where she shines steve has no idea how to sneak their way out but that leads the way effortlessly Stevie tag team — behind him cross shut up and let your homeroom you laugh at something I said do it on top of all that good stuff Stephen NAT have a really genuine rapport putting a man who never lies with the woman who lies for a living is a great choice that’s alright you just make something up what like you know the truth is matter of circumstance it’s not all things don’t we get the kind of friendship that we’re told a lot about in the Avengers in that in Clint’s but we don’t so much see I’ve seen some criticism levelled at the Russos that all they really did was improve the action and I think that’s only true if you willfully ignore all the character interactions they’ve excelled at putting on screen and it’s clear as day from their first foray into the MCU finally we have Bucky in many ways the final piece of the action puzzle what would any of these scenes be without him there to terrify our heroes and pursue them relentlessly Bucky’s got all the intimidating swagger a terminator bird the speed and agility to rival caps own they do a really great job of balancing their power levels there’s not one encounter in the movie where I feel like Steve’s just got this and the same goes for Bucky — they both knock seven shades of shit out of each other and it’s glorious to watch their fight on the streets at the end of the second act is the single best practical one-on-one in the MCU and it’s not even close every impact every dodge we get to see cap let loose and then underpinning it all is the reveal at the Winter Soldier is his long-lost best friend cap has a hard enough time trying to beat the Winter Soldier with his fists but it becomes something else entirely when he’s asked to beat his best friend he simply can’t punch his way out of the final battle so instead he does the most Captain America thing he can possibly do he stands his ground and fights for t believes in he stands there and says no you move gives him with you to the end of the line he wrists his life to the very edge just to prove to Bucky Barnes that he’s a person and not a tool of destruction and it’s just enough to turn the tide a little bit he doesn’t snap his mind back into place for good though far from it as will no doubt cover but that’s just enough on it for now plus the flashback scene set before the events of the First Avenger is a perfect window into their friendship I’m with you to the end of the line pal Bucky declaring that he’s with Steve to the end of the line is a sentiment as unwavering and determined as caps I could do this all day and it becomes apparent that their friendship is born out of mutual conviction to stand up for themselves and keep moving forward no matter what happens Steve is only the person that he is because of the best friend that lent his support every step of the way which helps to explain to us just why he’s so damn hell-bent on getting him back these three characters all solidify the central emotional theme of the movie friendship from the very first scene with Steven Sam to the last dramatic moment Captain America the Winter Soldier is all about CAPA justing — the hardest thing about the modern world finding people he can trust there’s a chance you might be in the wrong business Rogers finding people that can make him feel like he’s not alone it’s not about catching up on all the pop culture phenomenon that will make him feel at home in the 21st century unless they’ve been recommended to him by his newfound friend of course on your left Nick Fury also shares a key relationship with Steve and offers a humanizing rationale behind shields darkest ideas project insight is revealed to be an evil plan on the path Hydra but at the start of the movie it’s something Nick Fury is justifying as a logical countermeasure in not only a post Chitauri invasion worlds but also a post Avengers world the world’s filling up with people who can be matched they can’t be controlled high school valedictorian Iowa City Bruce Banner Stephen strange anyone who’s a threat to Hydra Nick and hydras thinking isn’t so different which is partly why it’s been so easy for them to remain right under his nose for so long this was the first time we saw Nick Fury is more than a cameo or a mentor he’s a character that sees his ideals tested and he ends up in real danger not to mention he wields some premium straight from the cow kind of milk [Music] the confidence the movie has to leave cap out of a huge action sequence like the Nick Fury car chase scene was an early indicator that the Russos were adept at knowing when to use certain characters in certain situations juggling them as and when they should appear in the story without bloating it full of gratuitous unnecessary appearances he for-sure that all important character trifecta because well four people would stop it being a trifecta Durr and mainly because he should’ve stayed dead not I don’t like Nick Fury I love Nick Fury but the way they sell his death so hard only for him to come back and then contribute so little to the MCU ever seen this just feels redundant I don’t even mind the idea of him going underground for a while but they straight-up ruin that and age of Ultron just a year later really the only two characters the Russos don’t quite nail in my opinion a Sharon Carter and Alexander Pierce with everything else going on in the movie Sharon Carter doesn’t really have an important role to play and it feels much more like an introduction to her character rather than a substantial outing in its own right plus they just have zero chemistry I know Sharon Steve is a direct holdover from the comics but it’s always been pretty freaking weird especially when his feelings for Peggy have remained a constant throughout the series is he trying to move on with Sharon is a flirtationship we don’t know really both of our appearances don’t have enough room to breathe this ever to be explored and then she’s dropped entirely an infinity war which is probably for the best the Russos can’t get it all right of course and this is one instance where I think they dropped the ball just a little let’s talk about that Hydra twist because it is ballsy shield had been an important building block towards crafting a cohesive cinematic universe in the first phase of the MCU so to take it away was the kind of bold switch up once thought to be strictly reserved for the big team-up movies this change made the Winter Soldier a solo movie just as important as a team-up feature if you want to catch all the seismic shifts going forward it meant the shield couldn’t be used as a crutch or a get-out-of-jail-free card it meant that the Avengers would have to save the world alone apart from that really dumb time and age of Ultron where Nick Fury somehow mobilizes a Helicarrier and it briefly ruins that but it doesn’t just improve upon what’s to come the Hydra twist also makes us re-examine the previous films in a new light any movie that can retroactively lis make Iron Man 2 better by virtue of having a secret hydrogen in it is a genius move in my book unlike the twisting Iron Man free the reveal gives us something after the fact beyond just surprise although Alexander P is underwhelming as the face of hydra hydra is an entity are really terrifying in this movie they feel like they’re everywhere they’re highly efficient and organized at every turn what’s Alexander Pierce isn’t all that great by himself I don’t you neither is the Winter Soldier it’s the combination of the face mind and the hand of Hydra coming together to provide cap of a substantial foe it’s also a neat continuation of the relationship Steve has with shield in the Avengers he’s wholly subservient to them until he gets his first taste of the potential misuse of authority we have orders we should follow in the Winter Soldier his relationship with shield is uneasy he doesn’t approve of Nick Fury’s methods and he’s pretty horrified by the concept behind project insight this isn’t freedom this is fear somehow did the writers take this set up and craft an arc for Steve in the movie well they didn’t Steve keeps his resolve as the world changes around him the price of freedom is high always has been its price I’m willing to pay and if I’m the only one then so be it I’m willing to bet I’m not he spent the whole movie sneaking around trying to make sense of what the modern world really is and this or inspiring speech he faces down Hydra right in the open know in the shadows like they would be to declare his intentions this is another instant classic cat moment in a movie chock-full of them on Steve’s role in the movie Christopher Markus stated he’s kind of distill Center and things happen around him and are influenced by him it can make it difficult with executives who often want arcs it’s very difficult not to sound lazy when you go well he does already have an arc know the arc the change there is no illusion would be yet to come and we’ll of course explore all of that in part 2 Captain America the Winter Soldier came off the back of the post Avengers solo movies Iron Man 3 and Thor the dark world they both ranged from having great moments to kind of terrible moments and I think they gave off the impression that standalone adventures wouldn’t be as well thought out as the big team-up pictures thankfully Captain America the Winter Soldier laid all of that to rest it felt like an essential chapter in the MCU a real game-changer that dissolved franchise mainstays like shield and Nick Fury well it’s also establishing cap is the heart and soul of the MCU the Winter Soldier still remains is one of my favorite MCU hell one of my favorite superhero movies of all time the Russos would go on to capitalize on all the threads they left open-ended with the 2016 sequel Captain America Civil War which was simultaneously a very different movie whilst also being more of a Winter Soldier — than I think anyone realized it would be what kind of toll did it take on cap where does it take him in Phase three and beyond and where is he going from age of Ultron to Civil War to homecoming to infinity war and looking ahead to his swan song an endgame will be looking into all of that next time so we don’t think we’d be doing this but someone has actually donated $100 which is incredible thank you very much dr. cheek’ and yeah yeah honestly that’s awesome you are as we said our patreon video AMAZON FBA best practices 👍 Million Dollar Case Study | Jungle Scout I Session 9

so everybody was here thanks so much welcome to the million dollar case study session 9 so I’m filling in for Gregg some of you might know me I’ve been on here before I’m again and I’m from the marketing team at jungle scout and today is a super special day because we have Joel lens from the biz dev team of Amazon so today Joel’s going to share some best practices and tips to level up your Amazon game and I’ve already learned a lot just by speaking with him yeah I started Amazon last year in 2016 so relatively new to the company but you know this place is growing and changing and adapting on a daily basis really and so there’s ton to learn here and stuff that may have been relevant even you know a few weeks ago may have certain nuances to it so obviously take everything here today with a grain of salt knowing that it could change next week but at the same time you know I think there’s some good kind of tips and tricks and if nothing else some good verbage that everyone on the call can pick up on and at least do some further research on or reach out to me after the webinar and you know deep dive a little bit further so basically you know my background I was in sales for about eight years after I graduated from college worked in another fortune 500 company for the last five and a half years prior to Amazon got my masters in business from University of Washington and just super excited to be here kind of entrepreneur at heart myself kind of dabbled with selling a little bit it’s kind of hard not to when you’re in this environment as far as selling on Amazon goes and that’s definitely a passion of mine to kind of take that further as time progresses so obviously my name is Joel Lenz I’m in the business development account management department here at Amazon just real quick you know it’s kind of a well-kept secret our what our group does here all of the you know the the ways that sellers can get signed up for Amazon is meant to be self service just like it is for the customer who’s purchasing on Amazon at the same time you know our role is to help bring on brand-new sellers to the amazon marketplace really for two reasons one is to ensure that we have have a depth of product that products that are already listed on Amazon so that we don’t run out of stock one way we do that is we engage with manufacturers wholesalers as well as many resellers just to make sure that we don’t run out of stock and then the second reason is really to make sure we have a breadth of product and that we’re constantly trying to bring on new products to the to the marketplace and that’s where I kind of see potentially a lot of those those of you on the phone kind of coming into play here is that you know you may be a brand owner you may be inventing something you may be sourcing something from a different country that we’ve never had listed before and so that’s why I’m kind of excited to see where some of these discussions lead first eight or nine slides here I’ll kind of go through quickly you guys don’t need to be sold on the power of Amazon but really the company’s mission statement is to be earth’s most customer centric company we’re all about the customer it’s our number one leadership principle and so if you run into frustrations as a seller it’s probably because we’re focused on the customer more than we’re focused on you as a seller so just keep that in mind if you always keep the customers viewpoint before yours as a seller you’re going to understand kind of the reasoning for a lot of the things we do here what’s our secret I just said it start with the customer and work backwards and that’s straight from Jeff Bezos our CEO as of last year Amazon was the most trusted brand buy rated by both the Harris Poll as well as reputation Institute we have worldwide over 300 million active customers so active customers somebody who’s made a purchase in the last 30 days and specific to the US market over 183 million unique visitors per month which you can see is substantial amount more than the competition I like to show this this is kind of like a cocktail napkin version of how you know Jeff Bezos and the leadership team came up with what they call the flywheel I like to put it up here just to show you that sellers have always been a huge part of the plan to grow the business it hasn’t always been just Amazon as the seller of record but actually bringing on third-party sellers like you guys to ensure that again that depth and breadth of selection is always there so just so you know how important third-party sellers are as again this is a year old statistic but 50% of the total units sold on Amazon were from third-party sellers not from Amazon as the merchant of record and that was last year and that’s growing so one of the first things that basically today to kind of give you an overview kind of step back a second I want to cover a few basic details and concepts like the bye box which I’m going to share on the screen but really my goal is to share with you guys kind of what the top four five best practices are for having a successful launch and doing very well on Amazon some of them aren’t very profound but if you don’t understand why they’re so important you might not take advantage of from the get-go so a few of those are going to be sponsored products which is like our Google AdWords pay-per-click advertising campaign I have four or five slides to go through on that another one if you’re a brand owner if you’re going to be bringing new content new selection to the marketplace it’s going to be registering as a brand owner um along with that once you’re a registered brand owner you can apply for a plus content and that means you can have additional pictures additional verbage on your listing page so that customers who may not be as familiar with your product or your brand can get a more detailed view of what all about and how it’s different from the competition um thirdly I’m going to explain in depth why FBA or fulfillment by Amazon is so important and then there’s a couple other items that I’ll touch on as well so what I wanted to kind of describe here we refer to the buy box as this yellow button up in the right-hand corner that says Add to Cart you’re probably all familiar with that button what you may not realize is when you click that Add to Cart button or your customer clicks that Add to Cart button there’s a seller on the back end whether that’s Amazon or a third party seller that just made a sale and the way that’s determined is by an algorithm that looks at not only price but customer reviews um order defect rate that the seller has so you want to have an low order defect rate which means you’re shipping on time your shipping quality products you’re not getting customer complaints and a number and a few other factors it looks at as well but the way to be eligible for the buy box um there’s a couple ways number one is using FBA fulfillment by Amazon once your product is in our warehouse it qualifies for prime shipping and that qualifies you for the buy box another way is to be a brand owner if you’re a brand owner and you’re working with an Account Manager I can actually apply for early buy box eligibility which means you get added to that potentially rotating list of peak of sellers who win the buy box from day one so those are the two most important things or two easiest ways to qualify for the buy box obviously you have to have competitive pricing as well but it doesn’t necessarily have to be the lowest price as you can see in the bottom right hand corner there there are other sellers on Amazon selling this piece of equipment and some of them have lower prices there’s one listed there for $63.99 um they may be in the buy box rotation but they’re not winning the buy box at this given moment in time one of the reasons for that may be because they’re charging shipping that’s going to be the primary kind of recommendations is whether you’re shipping from your warehouse or retail facility or your garage or whether you have your product in FBA you’re not going to want to sharp be charging for shipping because so many customers are looking for that free shipping even if you have to roll the shipping into the pricier product it’s going to make more sales that way so this is kind of a screenshot of that on that bottom right hand corner in the last screen if you were to click on see what other sellers see the other sellers that are selling this product this isn’t the exact same product but this would be the screen that if you it would look like if you clicked on what other sellers are selling it as you can see these are all the sellers who are winning the buy box and it’s a rotation so at any given moment if you click on a product and hit Add to Cart you know the top seller here all about office might make that sale the next time somebody clicks that product GRT group might make that sale you can see Amazon as the seller the third one down there they’re not even the ones currently winning the buy box so you know we don’t give our own inventory any preferential treatment it gets such it gets goes through the same algorithm as every third party seller so I’m going to jump into one of the keys to success here which is sponsored products and again that’s our pay-per-click advertising if you’ve ever used Google Adwords and try to do that pay-per-click marketing campaigns for products within Google or other marketplaces this is this is our version of it basically you’re going to choose your own keywords or you’re also going to use a combination of Amazon suggested keywords um excuse me we call that automatic targeting and that’s going to be based on the keywords and the product on the group the general category that your product is listed under um within your campaign that you set up you’re going to decide what your limits are both your pay-per-click limit and your daily limits when you when your campaign or when your when you win a certain appearance on one of these detailed pages depending on how much you’ve bid and how where you’ve placed in the ranking of winning that advertisement your ad could be placed on the top of the page could be placed within kind of the middle of the listings that pull up on the front page or it could be alongside the right side if you notice next time you do an Amazon search a lot of customers don’t even realize if there’s ads on the screen that sellers have paid for because they’re so relevant and we’ve actually done tests with test groups of customers that are searching for certain products and not only do they not realize that there’s ads in the search results they actually prefer having them there because they’re so relevant if your sponsored product listing pulls up it’s basically just looks like your listing and it’s just a sponsored product right under the title if a customer clicks on that you’re going to pay for that click we’re also going to calculate though if that click turns into a sale we’re going to calculate your a cost or average cost of sale and that’s going to be something you can monitor on a daily or weekly basis take that data and figure out what the what the best keywords are if there’s certain keywords that you’re getting a lot of clicks on but no sales you can use that as a negative keyword and actually filter out if people are searching for that keyword so that your sponsored product doesn’t pull up on the page so that you’re not paying for a bunch of clicks that that don’t end up in sales so the picture didn’t pull up on here but basically sponsored products is powerful because it enables you as a potentially new brand or a new seller to get your products pulled up on the front page as you can see from the statistic if only 30 percent of Amazon Chopper are clicking past the first page that means 70% are either they found what they wanted on the first page or they’re typing in a new search because they didn’t find it on that first page so here’s some of the reasons why you should do it discoverability increase sales relevance program transparency some pretty obvious things there but these are some things that cause your your product or your brand to build momentum and there’s an exponential effect from this you know once you make a sale and you get a good review that gets factored into by box eligibility which is important one of the little known facts which will get which we’ll get to here and some of the factor fiction items is that your sponsored products campaigns don’t actually go live they’re not viewable until you’re winning the buy box so it’s super important that’s why I explain the bot by box upfront that you either have your products in FBA fulfillment by Amazon or your brand owner and you qualify for it up front so these are some of the optimization tips there’s really you know I I can kind of help on the surface level initially with getting some of these things set up we can set up the automatic campaign for you guys when you launch as a new seller but a lot of it’s just really it’s kind of trial and error you know you’ve got to pay attention to what’s working and what’s not and make some adjustments and create some manual campaigns we do have a group though that is called a optimization sponsored projects sponsored products optimization group that you can sign up for basically it’s an eight-week commitment with at least twenty-five dollars per day so it’s a fifteen hundred dollar commitment over two months but they’re basically looking at your account every day and creating you campaigns which they then email to you and you activate and basically their goal is to get your a cost or your average cost of sale down as close to 10% as possible so basically your B they want the the amount of money that you’re paying and sponsored products to come out to 10% of what your revenue is which is actually pretty low most sellers when they set these up on their own they’re between kind of the twenty to forty percent range so they’re actually paying twenty to forty percent of the average cost in order to make a sale which is pretty that’s pretty high so obviously the goal is to spend less and make more hey Joel is there a resource or do some guide to just get a rule of thumb of what a cost-per-click might be for a given category or subcategory there so when when you set up a campaign based on the keywords in the category it actually tells you within seller central within your portal exactly what the average winning cost per click is so you can you can click match match the winning bid basically or you can actually set it up to outbid the average winning bid within your campaign so I mean on the on the automatic campaigns that we set up use either set up for five to ten cents per click with a $5 day maximum per campaign and you there’s usually one to three automated campaigns so it’s basically up to $15 a day and when you sign up when you sign up through a link that I can send you to be your account manager we actually give you $50 up front to kind of experiment with so that usually lasts two to four weeks depending on you know how successful the campaigns are but and while we’re on the topic can you just tell us again the name of that service that’s a fifteen hundred dollar commitment and how people can learn more yeah sponsored products I will note here that there’s some requirements for it so I’ll just go through this is what it is it’s an eight-week sponsored press P stands for sponsored product optimization support it’s for sellers that my team have on-boarded or the SSR stands for self-service registration if you’ve registered on your on your own already you may qualify for it if you’re a top seller but it’s a pretty high bar believe it’s about 10 million Everage and 10 million dollars per year or you’re on track to to sell 10 million dollars per year to qualify for it so it really is kind of an exclusive program that you can only apply for if you have an account manager like myself so here’s some of the requirements the direct sales seller that’s basically somebody that I onboard with in 2017 I have to agree to the minimum eight weeks agree to $25 a day usually the goal is that 10% average cost of sale like I mentioned and also once you get the email from the team who’s doing these optimization studies you need to implement those changes within 48 hours because that allows them to study those changes and iterate as necessary here’s some fact or fiction items regarding sponsored products so real quick since I can’t hear you I’ll I’ll guess for you sponsored products ads only show when you’re winning the buy box I already told you guys out when the answer is true the fact attributed sales show up same day in your campaign manager so what that’s what that’s saying there is that your average cost of sale is up to date like minute by minute which is not true it does take up to 24 hours for sales to be attributed to the cost of click-throughs sponsored products only for brand owners not true sponsored products can be set up and used by anyone don’t have to have an account manager you don’t have to be a brand owner it could be any seller however does that mean you would be paying for clicks to a listing yet you wouldn’t have the buy box you’ll be helping somebody else sell a product know if you’ve got it so it’s a good question if you’ve got a sponsored product campaign set up and you’ve got money that you’re ready and willing to spend it’s actually not going to take effect and you’re not even going to be bidding against other sellers for those keywords unless you’ve already won the pie box for that product or brand that you’re that you’re bidding on nice so yeah we’ll go into effect until you’ve got the buy box okay and so if getting the buy box is also part of a rotation does is there any correlation between your PPC spend and getting the buy box like are you more likely to get the buy box if you’re spending more ad dollars yeah once you’ve earned the buy box um yeah it does feed on each other so once you’ve earned the buy box and you’ve got sponsored product campaigns going you’re more likely to win the buy box a higher percentage of the time I’ll say you know as a brand owner if you’re bringing a brand new product to the market and nobody’s ever listed on Amazon as long as you go through the brand registry which enables me to get you early buy box eligibility you’re going to win the buy box 100% of the time because you’re the only one selling that product you know that’s the positive side of it the negative side is nobody might you know consumers might not be searching for your product so that’s where the sponsored products becomes so important because you can plug it you can bid on competitors brand names you can bid on certain category types you can bid on certain keywords that you know are going to be relevant for your product pull up on that front page and that’s where you know having already won the buy box is a huge benefit as a brand owner because then your sponsored products become effective immediately alright so um just a real quick kind of from a high level when you list a product on the Amazon it can be it’s going to ask for the condition type majority of items are going to be new if you’re like me probably the only thing that you’ve ever purchased that wasn’t new off of Amazon was a book so it’s a little known fact that if it is in a like new or used or refurbished condition you cannot use sponsor products for those items sponsor products is only applicable to new items alright so a little transition here as I mentioned and as most of you are probably aware you’ve got some different options for how to get your product from wherever it’s located to the customer who’s purchased it we refer to a MFN as merchant fulfilled network and that’s where your shipping from your warehouse your retail facility your manufacturing plant wherever it may be your shipping direct to the consumer and Amazon is not touching that product that is a not the best way to start out as a seller the best way is to start with FBA fulfillment by Amazon and again as I mentioned FBA is important because when your products are in our warehouses they qualify for that Prime badge so if you’re a Prime member you know what that is if you’re not a prime number I’ll explain real quick the Prime badge is that a little HTML logo that says Prime on a listing that indicates that that product gets it you get two free two-day shipping if you purchase it and we’re able to offer that because of our discounted rates for shipping as well as the fact that we charge customers $100 a year to be in the prime to be a prime member so when you as a 3rd party seller send your product in to us you get the advantage of discounted shipping rates and the advantage of having us pick pack ship and handle customer support as well as returns and fraud protection on your behalf and that all comes at a very minimal cost which I can get into a little bit later but I’ll tell you 60% of searches on Amazon today are done with a prime filter on the search that means if your product doesn’t have a Prime badge on it 60% of customers aren’t going to see it because they’re searching for products with that free two-day shipping logo so that’s huge you know you cut out the majority of our marketplace if you don’t have the Prime badge real quick I’ll touch on seller fulfill Prime it is something that you can qualify for as a seller if you meet the qualifications usually it takes anywhere from three to six months to qualify for that it’s an extremely high bar that we’ve set to both earn the right to have a prime badge on product that you’re shipping and to keep that privilege and have that so if it’s something that if it’s a product that for whatever reason it doesn’t make sense maybe it’s cost prohibitive or or whatever to send an FBA so a fulfilled prime is there but it takes some time to earn that privilege this is kind of an overview page but I’m going to go into depth a little bit more on a couple of these items so really your keys to success as a seller are these five items number one is to use FBA because that’s what qualifies you for the for the buy box the last one listed here which I spent a good majority of time on is to utilize sponsored products especially as a brand owner once you’ve earned the buy box you’ve got to get exposure to your product by advertising so that you can get customer use those customer views again feed into winning the buy box a higher percentage of the time obviously if somebody has a great experience with your product they’re going to tell other people about it you know they’re going to send them a link and you’re going to make more sales a couple of things it’s really going to be important for you guys in order to you get that early buy box eligibility is if you’re a brand owner you have to register to be a brand owner and for some of you if you’ve already applied on Amazon to be a seller you’ve already got an account and that was within the last couple weeks you may have been frustrated because you weren’t able to apply for brand registry the reason for that is from April 10th through the end of April the brand registry is closed they’re basically revamping the system they’re going to open it back up the first week of May so that you can self register for brand ownership again one of the big changes though and it’s a huge loop or it’s a huge hurdle to overcome if you haven’t already done this is that they’re now going to require that you have a trademark on your brand so you can’t just send a picture in with the name on it up you know a picture of your product and/or packaging with your name on it which is basically all it entailed before now you actually have to show the up trademark so there’s a there’s going to be a much higher bar to meet to to prove that your brand owner from here on out once you are approved as a brand owner that’s where you’re going to be that’s where if you have an account manager like myself I’m going to be able to apply for the early buy box eligibility but then you’re also going to want to go through and apply for enhance brand content and that’s where you get additional pictures that you can put on your listings and additional verbage that you can spell out you know why your product is so great so really both of those things are you’re able to do on your own through seller central which is our portal that you’ll have access to once you sign up and then another thing to really consider depending on you know whether you have downstream channels like other online marketplaces or other retail kind of brick-and-mortar shops that you’re planning to sell in if you don’t have a network or a system like that set up one thing to look at is called Amazon exclusives it’s basically really powerful because you can add video content if you pay to be a part of animal Amazon exclusives you can add video content to your listings they will run additional advertisements on your behalf at no expense to you they will also feature your product on the exclusive exclusives page which is one of our most visited pages on Amazon so it’s really a way for for folks who don’t have brick-and-mortar set up they don’t have a downline distribution set up with you know retailers and distributors and things like that to gain to basically go on Amazon exclusively you can only basic one of the terms is you can only sell on your own website and on Amazon for if you’re a part of the Amazon exclusives but it really just mat it maximizes your exposure on our marketplace and there’s a tremendous there’s I mean there’s literally like five times more tools available to you if you’re part of that exclusives program as there is to those people who are not are those sellers who are not a part of that so the next page here I’ll get into some of the costs and you know what I’m doing real quick yeah sorry to interrupt can we just go back for one second um regarding trademark we do have some questions about that so when you say trademark does it mean it has to be a fully registered trademark or just like a pending registration for the trademark suffice that’s a good question I don’t I don’t know the answer to that um it may be that if it’s pending that might be enough to to prove that your you’re going through the process I don’t know that I’d even be able to find the answer honestly until the new program is rolled out in May but yeah some to look out for obviously if you’ve got a trademark this isn’t going to impact you at all but if you don’t have one it’s definitely something to start looking into right now okay great thank you yep all right so what is it all cost it’s really easy to find this if you if you click on become a seller in Amazon but if you haven’t done that yet or you weren’t sure you were you know they’re confused on what the costs are what the differences are with individual account versus a professional merchant account I’m going to I’m going to dispel all the myths right here so there’s basically choose two ways to sign up for to be an Amazon third-party merchant to sell on Amazon or as we we call it to sell through Amazon not to Amazon you can sell you can sign up as an individual contributor or individual seller rather and that means that you are you don’t have a monthly fee all you do is you pay whatever the revenue share percentages in addition to that you pay one dollar flat fee per item that you sell so you compare that to a professional merchant account which does cost $39 $39 per month what it does is it provides access to an additional about seven or eight categories that you don’t have access to as an individual seller also has some reporting tools and then obviously if you sign up with my help through a registration link that I send you you get my account management support which lasts through the calendar year so obviously if you’re planning to do a high-volume amount of business ie 40 units or more per month or if that’s a goal of yours it’s a no-brainer to go with a professional merchant account just from it strictly from a numbers standpoint you’re going to save money by doing it that way the Amazon revenue sharing regardless of whether you’re an individual seller or your professional merchants it doesn’t change the revenue sharing percentage of the same and it’s dependent on the category that your product falls into so to kind of give you a sample I mean the 6% range it really only applies to the personal computer or PC category everything else is probably is going to be between 8 to 15 percent so you know consumer electronics is 8% cell phones cell phone devices cameras they’re all going to be 8% range things like office products or musical instruments are going to be at 15% and just to clarify here too you may have noticed all the all the categories that I just mentioned there are consumer electronics categories that’s the that’s the general category that I manage but I sit on a floor with 150 account managers for every product category that there is so it’s not hard to find the link within Amazon that spells out exactly what percentage that you’d be paying for or for whatever category that your product fall in and if you do contact me after this I’d be happy to point you in the right direction if your product is not fall in that Consumer Electronics category as far as the services and solutions go mention FBA this the cost you’re going to pay for FDA are so minimal um I hesitate to even mention that there’s a cost I mean you basically get a 50 to 80 percent discount on shipping your product to us and when we pick pack and ship it on your behalf the fees are so minimal it’s it really it’s it barely touches your bottom line I’ll just put it that way for what you’re getting the additional 60 percent exposure for the additional Prime badge and the additional freedom to not have to ship stuff every day yourself the cost is so minimal but we do have if if you look on you can just google FBA revenue calculator I believe that’s something you can pull up even if you don’t already have an account and you can plug in any products you want there and figure out what exactly what the cost would be then I mentioned exclusives exclusives as well that’s the program where we you’re limited to only selling your product on your website and our website but you get all the extra tool was an exposure as well as video content and free advertising that is an extra five percent added to whatever revenue sharing percentage you fall under so if you’re if you’re selling musical instruments and you’re in that fifteen percent range then and you decide you want to be part of exclusives it’s going to be additional five percent so the total would be twenty percent and finally there’s no extra fees for using account managers like myself I’m a non-commissioned sales person directly employed by Amazon all right so my contact information here is at the bottom left plenty of time for questions um basically uh you know you may be wondering do I qualify and let me I just want to spell out real clearly who it is that I’m looking to help and really work with for the calendar year the first and foremost I’m only allowed to work with new sellers um that’s sellers who don’t already have an account that’s had a first viable offer so first viable offer means you’ve put a product in your inventory and you’ve listed it as a live product even if you haven’t made a sale yet if that product has gone live on the website and it’s discoverable I’m not allowed to work with you because you’ve already figured it out on yourself figured it out for yourself so I am limited as well to working with about 80 to 100 sellers this year and so it’s kind of first-come first-served basis so probably most of the account managers here um won’t be able to accept any new sellers to help after probably the July to August timeframe from then on out we basically just help with account management running you know deals and sponsored products and some of the other levers within the amazon portal to make sure that the sellers that we’ve on-boarded in the first half of the year are as successful as possible um so yeah if you are interested if you haven’t already signed up for an account definitely shoot me an email let me know what your question is what your timeframe is for getting started I can point you in the right direction as far as the right account representative for the category that you’re in and they email there’s best way to reach me yeah sure thanks so much well that was super helpful and interesting a lot of these kind of like lesser-known programs so is there any recourse for people who are currently selling to get some kind of account management because we do have a fair number of people who are currently selling you know there’s it’s it’s hard it’s hard to say no but there’s really only one exception to to the just this flat-out no answer if if a seller is already on Amazon and they have access to refurbished or open box or out of stock items there is a kind of a loophole within the system where you can have a secondary account which I could then help with the account management on if you qualify for what we call our certified refurbished program it’s really it’s an invitation-only program again it’s a very high bar is set for the sellers that you let into that program you basically you’d have to have at least 400 units sold in the last 90 days and be able to show that you’ve got at least $50,000 in inventory of certified refurbished or grade-a refurbished products so there’s very few sellers that qualify for that especially if you’re a brand owner and you’re just looking to kind of start out bill your build your brand so there’s really if you’ve already signed up for an account and already listed a product there’s really not much I can much further I can help you with I mean I really can’t even answer emails if you’re in that category just because I’m strictly measured on brand new accounts that I help on to the to the marketplace sure makes sense now how about people who might want to circumvent like back and forth with Amazon support not quite getting the answer they want or maybe a listing is made inactive do you have any workarounds or hacks to expedite that process you know it’s again it’s not it may not be the most profound thing but also it might not be the most intuitive thing if somebody has a merchant account already so they’ve got access to seller central which is our internal portal really the best way I would say 80 to 90 percent of your issues or your questions can be found if you use that search bar on the search button in the top right hand corner of your seller central account um it’s just it’s very self service oriented if you have a question about any of the terms that I spoke about today you’re going to be able to find a video or two or three videos and a PDF and a you know a couple other resources to help you kind of deep dive how do I do this or where do I apply or what’s the best practice for this it’s all in seller central so um you know it’s I’ll be the first to admit our seller support department isn’t always a super responsive I mean that’s a pain point that we’ve had as we grow and scale our business and obviously have you know millions of sellers that are selling to hundreds of millions of people but I would say you know majority of the issues and problems that you’re trying to solve or questions that you have you’re going to find them faster if you just do if you’re willing to just put in that 30 to 60 minutes of like determined effort within seller central and dig for what you’re looking for you’re going to find the answer and it’s probably going to be a better answer or a more satisfying answer than what you get from seller support so I think simply gonna be quicker sure so I mean we have her in the chat that there something exists even if it does cost you to get a helper with an Amazon to aid your problems but from what I’m hearing from you it doesn’t exist and it’s really kind of like a seller central support issue yeah alright so there was can you also clarify as well regarding the brand registry I think you said this and I just want to confirm from you if you already had your brand registered you do not need to get it trademarked you’re grandfathered in yeah that’s that’s correct yep any if you’ve already got your brand registered you know prior to April 10th you’re your grandfather did okay great so yeah just a note to those people who are maybe having issues with Amazon or getting a product delisted or any variety of things we do have the Amazon FBA competitive edge our Facebook group it is super active and a bunch of collaborative and supportive sellers so you can pop your question in there my short circuit some of the time you you might spend digging through the forums and threads so just go to Facebook Amazon FBA competitive edge it is a private group so we’ll approve you and that might help on any any word that you can share as far as Amazon opening additional distribution centers um yeah so one thing I didn’t really get into details on for FBA fulfillment by Amazon is that when you set up your first FBA shipment or any FBA shipment for that matter you’re not going to know where that is going until you get to the very end of the shipment set up what it’s going to salt I’ll say first of all it could be anywhere from one fulfillment center that you’re required to send your products to up to three fulfillment centers and what it’s going to depend on is partly how your product is packaged so if you’ve got a bunch of individual packaged items all put in one box I you’re more likely to only have to send those to one location whereas if you’ve got you know 60 products and they’re in three different boxes you’re probably going to have to send them to three different locations so you it’s pretty rare that you are fortunate enough to mail your FBA shipment to the closest fulfillment center to you really that fulfillment centers have almost nothing to do the locations of them have nothing to do where you’re with where you’re going to end up how to ship your product again it’s based on an algorithm that’s going to determine based on both the quantity of what you’re sending in as well as the category that you’re sending in and where it’s most likely to be sold in the country if that’s what’s it’s going to be determined by that and usually I would say the majority of the time even when you if you’re let’s say you send twenty items to one fulfillment center as soon as those get received in only ten of them might stay there and then they’re going to reroute the other ten to two or three other facilities um so it’s I don’t know if that answers the question I don’t have insight as to where the fulfillment centers are growing up but I think maybe the root of the question was or is there going to be one built near me so I don’t have to ship my stuff as far and it really has no even if they built one in your back yard they might ask you to send it to the opposite end of the country sure sure Thanks so here’s a question I have seen this numerous times interested to hear your take so if it’s a lot of our audience our private label sellers so there should only be one seller on the listing however they might not have the by box any best practices or solutions to address this so the scenario is they’re the only ones with the product but they don’t have the by box yet yeah correct I guess it’s somebody call it like a listening being hijacked so there so there’s other sellers selling the same product that are winning the buy box yeah exactly um yeah it’s a very scenario specific but if it if it looks like it is a fraudulent seller that is hijacking that listing the best thing to do is do a test buy from that seller and verify whether it’s an authentic product or not if you do a test buy and you report an inauthentic product to Amazon especially if you’re brand registered that’s going to get looked at immediately if you’re the registered brand owner even if you’re not the registered brand owner I would say that’s the fastest way to fix fraud is to do a test buy but that the test by I mean that obviously it that doesn’t happen overnight you’ve got to wait for them to ship it to you and then you’ve most most of the time you’ve got to ship that into Amazon to prove that it’s a fraudulent product another way is just to see if there’s any illegal listing features on that on that a fraudulent listing such as one of the things that’s a big no-no is redirecting so if if the listing if is one of the bullet points or somewhere in the listing says if you need more info or for specific shipping information please contact you know XYZ at you know people aren’t sellers aren’t allowed to redirect to other websites or email addresses or phone numbers within the listing so if you can see that you can report a listing right on the listing I mean you can there should be a spot within every listing where you can report um inaccurate or inauthentic information within a listing sure um so we have time for just a few more questions before we wrap up but I think the program that somebody was referring to earlier Sally as the inside management program which is a strategic account management program do you know anything about that yeah so it’s a strategic Account Manager um generally again don’t quote me on this because this may have changed since last year but uh strategic account managers are assigned generally to accounts that are selling um between 20 to 30 million a year um so again that is one way for you for a seller to get an account representative if they didn’t have one when they initially signed up but you’re going to need to show that you’re selling that type of volume you know basically one to one and a half million a month might qualify you for that for having an insight account manager like that you know I would say if you don’t already have an account or you’ve signed up for an account but you haven’t listed yet feel free to email me and I’ll help you figure out point in the right direction and if you know if you think you need the additional support I’d be happy to help otherwise you know I would just I would encourage everybody to really you know be proactive about figuring out and solving for things that you’ve either heard about it you want to learn more about if you can’t find it on seller central um you know like Ken said there’s probably a Facebook page or a support website or you know even a forum within jungle Scout that has the answer so you know don’t don’t don’t call Amazon seller support and expect as good a customer service as you would if you’re a customer buying a product that’s my it’s my final advice sure sure um thanks so much that was those fantastic you’ll really appreciate it and everybody who is joined as well that concludes section nine of the million dollar key study so thanks for being here next week we will have a lawyer so we’ve had a lawyer before but this is going to be a different type of lawyer to focus on legal structure and taxes so being real important as far as like covering the topics of what type of company formation you want what taxes you’re liable for a whole bunch of other we did see a preview of what he was talking about and it will be really helpful so we will send reminders for that until then email us any questions you have supported jocose Capcom really appreciate you guys being here and can’t wait to see you guys next week hi thanks Ken thanks everybody thanks a lot Jewell
